Chair

Stephen Catling joined the Board of Trustees in 2017 and became Chair in 2018. He was initially involved with FoodCycle through providing a pro-bono mentoring programme in 2015 at Head office.

Stephen is a true foodie. He studied Food Science and Chemistry at University and has subsequently been nearly 30 years in the food and food ingredients industry. He currently has his own company providing advisory, non-executive and consulting services to the food, ingredients and speciality chemical industry. Stephen has had a special focus on the nutrition and wellness area over the last year.

Until 2014, Stephen was Chief Executive of the speciality ingredients Division of Associated British Foods PLC, a FTSE 50 UK company . He held this role for over a decade. Prior to that he was Managing Director and Divisional President at Danisco A/S (now DuPont), a world leader in food ingredients.

“I passionately believe in the positive social impact that FoodCycle provides in local communities. I hope to bring all my food and business experience to the organisation to help FoodCycle continue to develop and grow in the coming years.”

David joined the board of Trustees in early 2020 as part of a desire to volunteer time in a meaningful way and to add value from his business experience. Food and the social experiences revolving around it have always been central to his life so FoodCycle is a perfect fit.

He has held various senior finance roles in a wide range of industries. He is currently a Finance Director for a large data centre operator. He holds a degree in Economics from The University of Nottingham and an MBA from London Business School. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Dr. Olivia Barata Cavalcanti

Dr. Olivia Barata Cavalcanti

Olivia has over a decade of experience in public health with a special focus on nutrition, global health and public-private partnerships.

In her most recent role as Director of Science and Programmes at the World Obesity Federation, she led the organization’s training and certification program, which addresses professional development for obesity care in healthcare systems. She was also responsible for monitoring obesity prevention and treatment in health systems across the globe and was in charge of scientific knowledge management for the organization.

She has worked for different international and non-profit organizations in Europe and the United States where she was in responsible for all aspects of design and implementation of different health program on diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease for both children and adults with a focus on low-income settings. She also has deep knowledge of and experience with the UN system having worked at UNAIDS in Mozambique, for the US Fund for UNICEF and as a Fellow at the Italian Mission to the UN. Olivia has experience teaching Public Health, Community Health and Research Methods courses in different universities at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

She earned her Doctorate of Public Health degree from CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Healthy Policy. She also holds a Master of Public Health and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University. She was born and raised in beautiful Rio de Janeiro and has lived in Rome, New York and Maputo before landing in London.

Mark joined FoodCycle as a Trustee in September 2017. Mark Game has been a leading light within the surplus food redistribution sector for over 20 years, tirelessly working to rescue and transform edible surplus food for social and environmental purpose, creating innovative and effective solutions both for the food industry and communities on low incomes with families facing food insecurity, diet inequality and isolation.

As CEO of Company Shop, Mark was responsible for its relocation and rapid expansion, establishing its ‘profit for purpose’ culture and business model. During his tenure, he developed Company Shop’s CIC, the UK’s first social supermarket – Community Shop.

Recognising the value of food socially, in 2016 Mark established The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT). TBBT is a charity that strives to make life more affordable for people by using community led food clubs to build community resilience, partnering with existing community projects and working with service providers to develop wraparound support for the community as a whole.

Beyond this Mark has worked on industry work groups with DEFRA and WRAP and has actively collaborated with industry and Government to seek out best practice for reducing and redistributing food surplus.

Pippa Garland

Pippa Garland has been a board member of FoodCycle since 2017. Pippa is a charity lawyer and partner in the charity and social business team of Russell-Cooke. Pippa advises charities and social enterprises on legal and commercial issues, including corporate structure, governance and regulatory compliance. Pippa regularly provides training to trustees and charity employees on legal topics, including fundraising and general charity law, and is a contributing author to the legal textbook, “The Charities Acts Handbook”. In addition to being a trustee of FoodCycle, Pippa also sits on the Public Affairs Committee of Philanthropy Impact.

Kalyani Gupta

Kalyani Gupta

Trustee

Kalyani joined the board of Trustees in summer 2021. She currently advises on equality, diversity and inclusion policy at UK Research and Innovation.

Kalyani has a long-standing interest and passion in food sustainability issues. She previously worked with FoodCycle LSE as a project leader and coordinator for over 4 years. She’s also researched food poverty issues within Cambridge as part of helping to set up the Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance. More recently, she co-founded Nourish Our World, a programme to help connect young people with food and climate change challenges.

Kalyani has a multi-disciplinary background having spent time in academia obtaining a PhD in materials chemistry and remains passionate about tackling deep-rooted and complex systems-level societal and environmental issues. She loves to cook, weave and spend as much time as possible in the countryside.

Matt is the Chief Marketing Officer at Rightmove, sitting on the exec team of the FTSE 100 business and responsible for the marketing portfolio across trade, customer and corporate.

He has spent his career in leadership roles across several digital businesses. Most recently at Just Eat he ran marketing for UK&I and was part of the leadership team built its position as market leader.

It was at Just Eat where Matt was introduced to FoodCycle where they worked together on different campaigns where Just Eat and its customers helped to support the FoodCycle mission.

Nick Johnson

Nick Johnson

Nick is a Local Councillor in Southwark in South London and chair of a community charity called Restorative Justice for All. In his professional life he has run a number of international consulting firms and has been fortunate enough to work in forty different countries. Nick also has his own gin brand – Trinity25 (but that’s another story!).

Throughout his career, Nick has always been drawn to causes that have a real social impact so is very pleased to be joining FoodCycle as a Trustee and helping to combat food waste, food poverty and social isolation.

Frances Le Grys

Frances is a corporate lawyer by background and was formerly a Partner & General Counsel at an international law firm, with a role advising the Chair, Boards, Committees and stakeholders on business-critical matters, risk strategy, corporate structures, governance and liability issues. She is also an experienced non-executive director with over 15 years experience working with non-profits and charities and as a school governor. Frances has a particular interest in corporate governance and business ethics.  Her current focus is on cyber risk and cyber security, and she is very interested in issues relating to food poverty and food security, also acting as a trustee of Hammersmith & Fulham Foodbanks. During the pandemic Frances was a frequent volunteer in the vaccine rollout programme and is keen to highlight and support the key role played by volunteers.
