Meet Younis, a regular guest at all three FoodCycle Projects in Wales! Younis doesn’t just attend meals, he also brings others along too to enjoy a free three course meal and the warm welcoming space. Whether it’s new faces he’s met or friends who need some encouragement, Younis makes sure they don’t miss out on the welcoming atmosphere and hearty meals FoodCycle provides.
A self-proclaimed food critic, Younis is known for jotting down the menu at each meal and rating it out of 10. Spoiler: the soups almost always score a perfect 10!
Younis also takes time to get to know other guests and volunteers, often helping those in need. One example is Paul, a guest with sight issues, whom Younis helps walk to the Project venue. His kindness and enthusiasm for community shine brightly, and he’s always eager to spread the word about FoodCycle!
What brought you to FoodCycle?
It was during Covid. I saw a leaflet on the floor for FoodCycle Newport, and it turned out to be a lifesaver. At the time, I had no gas or electricity, so I couldn’t cook, and my place was freezing cold. FoodCycle gave me warmth, food, and a chance to socialise with others during such an isolating time.
Since then, I’ve been encouraging people to join. I tell them about the meals, take them myself, and make sure they feel welcome. For me, FoodCycle isn’t just about food, it’s about the community spirit and having a place to be with others. It’s been a saviour in so many ways.
What were your first impressions?
The first time I went to FoodCycle Newport, I had the soup, and wow, it was a 10 out of 10! Honestly, you’d pay £15 for something like that at a restaurant. I knew straight away this was something special.
Has FoodCycle made a difference for you?
I don’t have a fridge, so eating fresh food is a real challenge for me. FoodCycle has helped me eat healthily every week, which I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. With food prices going up, it’s been a lifeline for my budget too.
What’s the community like?
FoodCycle brings people together from all backgrounds: homeless, elderly, working, or struggling with mental health. Everyone’s welcome, and the volunteers treat you with so much kindness. It’s that community feeling that makes it such a special place.
What would you say to someone thinking of attending?
Come along! Have a tea, a chat, and a meal. Everyone is so welcoming, and it’s a place where you’ll feel at home no matter your situation. FoodCycle isn’t just about food—it’s about friendship and support. It’s a place for everyone.
