A massive congratulation to our team of cyclists that took on the London to Brighton cycle ride last weekend! They’ve raised over £1,500 so far – and donations are still rolling in! Thank you to everyone that donated and a huge thanks to all of our fantastic fundraisers. You made the day so enjoyable and were great company throughout – we couldn’t have finished without you!
The Journey
The team set off from Clapham Common bright and early on Sunday morning. We got out of London and then passed through Mitcham, Banstead and Nutfield before climbing Turners Hill for a fantastic buffet lunch. Despite everyone having told us the ride was reasonably flat all the way, other than the final climb over the South Downs, we beg to differ!
The afternoon took us through sleepy Sussex, down winding lanes and across the countryside until we reached the infamous Ditchling Beacon – a formidably steep chalky hill with a well-deserved reputation. A huge shout-out must go to Cat and Alice from FoodCycle Bristol who made it up with trailers of surplus food attached to their bicycles!
After a couple more energy bars at the top, it was a beautiful downhill descent and a final few miles through the city of Brighton to the finish line along the seafront.
Highlights
The lunch, organised by Skyline Event Management, was a massive highlight! Some of our team members took the opportunity to have a quick lie-down…
We had a fab father-son team that finished before any of the rest of us…
Plus these nutters from FoodCycle Bristol that decided cycling to Brighton wasn’t enough, and decided to tow bicycle trailers full of food to redistribute at the end! (They actually kept going all the way to Paris and back… Read more about it here!)
And, of course, the finish line was a brilliant moment for us all!
Looking Forward…
Feeling inspired? Why not take on the London to Pairs Cycle in 2016! We can also help you get places in challenges like the 3 Cities Cycle, Vietnam-Cambodia Cycle or even the overnight Newcastle to London for those who are really serious about getting in the saddle!
And if you hate cycling, there are always running events, sponsored swims and more – just email libby@foodcycle.org.uk if you’ve got something else in mind.
It’s not too late to show your support!
As mentioned above, our Bristol Hub Leaders have extended their journey, going London-Brighton-Paris-London – all with their trusty bicycle trailers attached, to raise awareness of food waste across the channel and back!
They’ve done such a fantastic job already and are showing no signs of slowing down any time soon! Please dig deep and show them your support as they take on this epic challenge of a lifetime.
