Homelessness can mean many different things – from being in temporary accommodation to sleeping on the streets. Whatever a person’s actual circumstances, being homeless often means that they have difficulty affording or having access to regular, nutritious food.
At FoodCycle, our vision is to make food poverty, loneliness and waste a thing of the past for every community.
While we aren’t directly donating food to homeless shelters, we provide free food for anyone that needs it – including those who may be homeless.
With community dining, week in, week out we provide delicious meals and great conversation to any one that needs it. Everyone is welcome, from any walk of life, and all our meals are free.
If you want to donate food to charity, one of the best ways is to donate to your local food bank. You can usually find a box for charity food donations near the check-outs in your local supermarket, along with a list of what the food bank needs most that week.
Some homeless shelters also accept donations of food from the public. If you’re thinking about donating food to a homeless shelter the best thing is to contact them and ask them what they need. There are usually restrictions on what they can accept (usually due to food safety rules), but they might also need other things (like toiletries) rather than food.
To find your local homeless centres, you can use a website like homeless link, or contact your local council.
People often ask us if they can donate food to help us provide meals. Unfortunately, we can’t accept food charity donations from members of the public, as we are only able to accept surplus food from supermarkets and other food retailers.
If you want to help FoodCycle, there are different ways you can support us. There are a number of different volunteer roles – whether you love to cook, to meet people or to help with organisation, you’ll find a role for you. Check out our volunteer roles.
Or maybe fundraising is more your line. That’s great, we love to hear from people who are keen to raise money to help us feed hungry people – whether homeless or not. Have a look at some of our fundraising ideas.

🎉 A huge well done to FoodCycle Hartlepool for their very first themed night! 🎉
The evening was a fantastic success, thanks to the amazing effort of the Hartlepool volunteers who went above and beyond to make it extra special. Decorations, table snacks, and thoughtful touches helped create a brilliant atmosphere for their guests. 💛
A big thank you to their regular volunteer from Quorn for the fantastic donation of Quorn burgers, which were a real hit. 🍔
And a huge shout out to Morrisons Hartlepool for their incredible support. Their donations of cookies and dips made the meal even more memorable and will continue to help with future meals too. 🍪✨
It is wonderful to see the Hartlepool team showing the power of community spirit through food and friendship.
Don`t forget to tag us in all your posts, we love to see what our projects are creating for their communities.

We were absolutely delighted to be selected as one of 20 charities supported by Overbury’s 2025 Charity Quiz.
Held at Westminster Park Plaza in February, the event brought together 100 teams from across the construction industry, raising an incredible £500,000 for charity through an evening of quiz rounds, connection and generosity.
A huge thank you to Overbury and all the event sponsors for their fantastic support.
And a special shout out to Rebecca Bradshaw, Overbury staff member and dedicated FoodCycle volunteer, for nominating us – we’re so grateful.
