We’re pleased to announce that we have been chosen as one of the charity partners for the upcoming film, The Old Oak (released in cinemas on 29th September).
THE OLD OAK is directed by Ken Loach, written by Paul Laverty and produced by Rebecca O’Brien, and completes their unofficial North East trilogy following acclaimed films including Sorry We Missed You and I, Daniel Blake.
In an unlikely friendship, the landlord of an ailing local pub TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner) meets a curious young Syrian Yara (Ebla Mari) with her camera. Can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other? So unfolds a deeply moving drama about their fragilities and hopes.
As part of our partnership, two of our volunteers, Judith and Jasmine, attended the Premiere in Newcastle.
“We had an incredible night and were even lucky enough to speak with Ebla Mari, who plays Yara, the young Syrian woman that is the driving force behind bringing the community together after seeing the slogan ‘eat together, stick together’. It was moving, and I felt so proud to be there representing FoodCycle, knowing this is what we do every week – bringing communities together to sit and share food. Go see it, it’s amazing!
