Cook and collect – getting back in the kitchen

Everyone involved with FoodCycle knows how passionate we are about community dining and creating amazing meals out of surplus food.  Over the past few months, we haven’t been able to hold our Community meals and in order to continue to provide food for our guests, we have been running a food parcel delivery service.

The delivery service was set up as an emergency response, but it is not our model as a charity, and it is not sustainable on a long-term basis.

With the easing of some of the restrictions and having put new processes in place we now feel that it is safe enough for our volunteers to pull their aprons back on and get back to cooking.

We will still be cooking delicious, nutritious, vegetarian food but sadly, it isn’t safe enough to sit down and eat with our guests just yet.  To start we will be asking guests to come and collect the prepared food and take it home with them.

In line with government guidelines, we will be storing all volunteer and guest contact details for 21 days, as part of the NHS track and trace system.

This will be a slow transition over the next 3-4 months, volunteers at each Project will get full guidance and training on moving to ‘Cook and collect’ and we will update guests in advance of any change to the service.

Some of the new measures we have put in place:

  • Sanitiser stations
  • Sneeze guards and facemasks for volunteers
  • Posters, signage and floor markings
  • Extra precaution around hygiene, PPE and cleaning
  • Smaller volunteer teams
  • Updated volunteer roles and guidance
