Durham Hub

FoodCycle Durham Hub

FoodCycle Durham has been running since September 2010! In that time, it has served over 7000 meals, using 6000 hours of volunteer time! From March 2016, FoodCycle Durham are expanding to produce a second weekly meal in nearby Chester-le-Street.

We’re always on the lookout for new volunteers and everyone is welcome to get involved with us – whether you’re a keen chef or you’d like to learn a bit more about cooking and the community, we’d love to have you on board. To sign up to volunteer just click here - you’ll be volunteering in no time!

If you fancy a tasty three-course meal and to meet people in your local community then come along to Sanctuary 21 for dinner on Wednesday evenings at 6pm – everyone is welcome.

Many different people can be at risk from food poverty and social isolation. Our Hub serves people including those on low-incomes and homeless people, providing a delicious and healthy meal in a friendly and safe environment. If you could help us to provide a meal for someone today, please donate just £3.

Some of our guests come on the bus from as far afield as Sunderland and Darlington, claiming that it is the best night of their week!

“Volunteers are always willing. They will always give you 10 minutes to get something off your chest.”Paul, Durham Hub service-user.

“It means a great deal to me because it is different to what I have at home. Different, good food, a change of environment.” - Durham Hub service-user.

“It helps me eat more healthily and gives me a lot more confidence.” – Durham Hub service-user.

We’re the Durham FoodCycle Hub. Every Wednesday evening we serve delicious food at Sanctuary 21, a local Salvation Army centre. We are a mixture of Durham University students and local residents, working in partnership with the university colleges, local churches, and our local Transition Towns organisation. Each week we collect surplus ingredients from the very generous Durham Indoor Market, Robinsons on North Road, Ciao Ciao bakery and Flat White cafe (thank you!). We then come together to plan, create and serve a nutritious meal for our guests from Durham and the surrounding area.

Donations come in many forms

Thanks to our suppliers, volunteers, and community partners, FoodCycle is a low-cost model with a big impact.

However we do have some core costs and are reliant on your generosity to help us run.
